Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance and is an excellent way to replace a gap created by one or more missing teeth!
Abridge consists of two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap (these anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth) and are attached to an artificial tooth or teeth in between the crowns (these are called pontics). Dental bridges are highly durable and are supported by natural teeth or implants.

Reasons for a fixed bridge:

  • Fill space of missing teeth
  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position
  • Restore chewing and speaking ability
  • Restore your smile
  • Upgrade from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental appliance

What does getting a fixed bridge involve?

Getting a bridge usually requires two or more visits. During the first visit, the two anchoring teeth are prepared by removing a portion of the enamel to allow for a crown to be placed over them. Next, an impression is made which will be sent to a dental laboratory where the bridge will be fabricated. In addition, a temporary bridge will be made for you to be wear to protect the exposed teeth and gums while your bridge is being made at the lab. This temporary will be worn until your next appointment.
At the second visit, your temporary bridge will be removed and the new permanent bridge will be carefully checked, adjusted, and cemented to achieve a proper fit. Occasionally Dr. Swantkowski may only temporarily cement the bridge, allowing your teeth and tissues time to get used to the new bridge. In this case, the new bridge will be permanently cemented at a later appointment.
